Keisha Newell

Head Basketball Coach: Mother McAuley High School

Newell was named the new Mother McAuley varsity basketball coach on May 22 and started the job on June 3. A Marian Catholic High School and Loyola University-Chicago graduate, Newell comes to McAuley from Roosevelt University. Over 4 seasons, she led the Lakers to a 59-62 record, including a 16-14 mark this past season.

Newell excelled as a talent developer and a coaching mentor to Rambler student-athletes, particularly those in the backcourt. Current redshirt junior guard Taylor Johnson turned in one of the best rookie campaigns in Loyola history under Newell’s watch, garnering Horizon League Newcomer of the Year and All-Horizon League Second Team honors in 2012-13. Monica Albano, another backcourt standout, also thrived with Newell’s basketball tutoring as she finished her collegiate career with 1,350 career points to rate fourth on Loyola’s all-time scoring list.

Prior to her three-year tenure as an assistant coach at Loyola, Newell started her bench career as the Ramblers’ director of basketball operations following her graduation with a bachelor of business administration, completing concentrations in marketing and sport management, in May of 2010. As Loyola’s director of basketball operations, Newell gained extensive experience in every managerial facet of the program to prepare her for coaching and running a program.

Newell, née Collins, was a three-year captain and starter at point guard for the Ramblers. She capped her 87-game career in Rogers Park as one of the best all-around floor generals to ever don Maroon and Gold, scoring 957 points, pulling down 345 rebounds and handing out 371 assists to rank in the Rambler’s top 10 for all-time dimes.
